PSMA Geocoded National Address File (G-NAF)

The Geocoded National Address File (referred to as G-NAF) is Australia’s authoritative, geocoded address file.

G-NAF is one of the most ubiquitous and powerful spatial datasets. It contains more than 13 million Australian physical address records. The records include geocodes. These are latitude and longitude map coordinates. G-NAF does not contain any names or personal information.

G-NAF is produced by PSMA Australia Limited (PSMA), an unlisted public company formed by the nine governments of Australia to collate and standardise, format and aggregate location data from each of the jurisdictions into authoritative location based national datasets.

This initiative to make the G-NAF openly available has been achieved through collaboration between PSMA and the Commonwealth and State and Territory Governments.

Updated versions of the G-NAF will be published on a quarterly basis from February 2016.

As at November 2019, users have the option to download datasets with feature coordinates referencing the new Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020) in addition to datasets on the GDA94 datum.

For GDA2020 datasets, the name of the zip folder and the root folder (once extracted) include a reference to GDA2020. For GDA94 datasets, the zip and root folder names do not contain the datum name (i.e. they remain the same as previous releases).

For example, the zip and root folder for G-NAF downloaded in GDA2020 for November 2019 looks like this:

   • NOV19_GNAF_PipeSeperatedValue_GDA2020

The zip and root folder for GNAF in GDA94 for November 2019 looks like this:

   • NOV19_GNAF_PipeSeperatedValue

Irrespective of the datum chosen, files within the respective folder use exactly the same naming structures.

For further information on G-NAF, including FAQs on the data, see: www.psma.com.au/products/g-naf or contact and PSMA’s network of value added resellers and integrators provide a range of commercial products based on G-NAF including software solutions, consultancy and support.

License Information

Use of the G-NAF downloaded from data.gov.au is subject to the End User Licence Agreement (EULA)

The EULA terms are based on the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0). However, an important restriction relating to the use of the open G-NAF for the sending of mail has been added.

The open G-NAF data must not be used for the generation of an address or the compilation of an address for the sending of mail unless the user has verified that each address to be used for the sending of mail is capable of receiving mail by reference to a secondary source of information. Further information on this use restriction is available here.

End users must only use the data in ways that are consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles issued under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

Users must also note the following attribution requirements:

Preferred attribution for the Licensed Material:

G-NAF ©PSMA Australia Limited licensed by the Commonwealth of Australia under the Open Geo-coded National Address File (G-NAF) End User Licence Agreement.

Preferred attribution for Adapted Material:

Incorporates or developed using G-NAF ©PSMA Australia Limited licensed by the Commonwealth of Australia under the Open Geo-coded National Address File (G-NAF) End User Licence Agreement.

What to Expect When You Download G-NAF

G-NAF is a complex and large dataset (approximately 5GB unpacked), consisting of multiple tables that will need to be re-joined prior to use, as the dataset is primarily designed for application developers and large-scale spatial integration.

Users are advised to read the technical documentation provided below before downloading and using the product.
