Study Area Description
Lagos is the chief port of Lagos state, the largest city in Nigeria, and also a rapidly growing urban hub in Africa. Until December 1991, Lagos was the federal capital of Nigeria. Its mean elevation is approximately 24 m. Most of the population, industrial and commercial activities are concentrated in the Lagos Metropolitan area. Lagos enjoys ‘wet equatorial’ climate due to its close proximity to the Equator and the Gulf of Guinea. Here mean annual rainfall is above 1800 mm, mean monthly temperature of about 30 degree Celsius, and about 80 % to 100 % relative humidity (Braimoh & Onishi, 2007). The rainy season (April to October) and dry season (November to March) are dominant over Lagos.
As discussed in the project overview, this study is more focused on investigating urban expansion and associated consequences such as the increase in temperature, precipitation. So instead of just confining the study area as Lagos administrative boundary, here, an approach will be taken to consider an extended area for better characterizing considered factors. Our considered area extends from 2.85 to 3.80 Longitude and 6.41 to 6.94 Latitude.
